Just got engaged? First of all congratulations
Now comes the part no one really prepares you for… you just got engaged, what do you actually do next?
If you’re planning a wedding in Bolton, Manchester or Liverpool, or anywhere else, this will help you get started.
Wedding planning can be so exciting but it also could be overwhelming and chaotic all at once , I wanted to take the stress out of it for all you nearly-weds so here is a simple NO-STRESS guide to help you start planning your wedding the right way.
Actually enjoy it (don’t skip this)
Before you dive into spreadsheets and budgets… take a second.
Go out, celebrate, tell your people, take photos, soak it in. This is one of the most exciting moments of your life , don’t rush past it.
Have the “big picture” conversation
Before booking anything, sit down together and talk about:
What kind of wedding do you want? (big,, small,, city, countryside... Vegas?)
Rough guest numbers
General vibe (formal, chilled, party, alternative)
Set a rough budget
Not the fun part, but a necessary one, once you know what's important and what your top budget is the rest is just allocation, if you are looking for a handy guide for allocating your budget check out our other post specifically on budgets here.
Decide:
Total budget
Who is contributing
What matters most to you (this is key)
Hot tip: If photography is important to you, prioritise it early — good photographers book up fast.
Start looking at venues
Your venue will shape everything:
Date
Location
Style
Popular venues can book up 1–2 years in advance, especially around Manchester, Liverpool, and Sheffield.
Don’t panic just start researching and booking viewings.
Book your key suppliers early
Once you have a venue (or even a date in mind), lock in:
Photographer 📸
Videographer
Hair & makeup
Entertainment
These are the suppliers that go first.
As a wedding photographer myself, I can tell you the couples who book early get the best choice of dates and styles.
Start collecting ideas (without overwhelming yourself)
Pinterest is great… until it isn’t, I personally am obsessed with a mood board and wish my couples would start jumping on canva and showing me their vibe.
Save ideas for:
Outfits
Decor
Colours
Vibes
Just be careful not to accidentally get pulled in to recreating somebody else's wedding, unless that's want but I doubt that if your on here :), Your day should feel like you, not a checklist.
Hot tip: Look at different types of parties not just weddings!!
Think about your timeline
You don’t need a full schedule yet, but start thinking about:
Time of year
Indoor vs outdoor
Travel between locations
This helps everything else fall into place later.
Don’t try to do everything at once
This is where most couples burn out. It's exciting and you want it to go great, and it will, if you guys let yourself breath.
You don’t need to:
Book everything in a week
Have every detail figured out
Be “on it” 24/7
Take it step by step, you’ve got time.
Make it yours
The best weddings aren’t the most expensive, they’re the ones that feel the most personal.
Whether that’s:
A relaxed city wedding
A big party with all your friends
Something completely non-traditional
Do what feels right for you and your partner and nobody else.
Start building your dream team
Your suppliers aren’t just services they provide, they’re the people shaping your day.
Find people whose:
Work you love
Energy you vibe with
Style matches yours
Most importantly, who you feel safe with, I have this myself when I am taking on clients, I ask myself would I trust you with my pets, feels like a good litmus test to me at least..
Because that makes all the difference, not the pet, but the safety and the protection of your memories, don't let your memories be spoiled by a racist or homophobic supplier.
Final thoughts
Wedding planning doesn’t have to be stressful.
If you focus on:
What matters to you
Booking key suppliers early
Taking things one step at a time
You’ll be absolutely fine and you'll probably enjoy it a lot more too.
